Grant seems off the whole rest of the evening after his talk with Alex. They both sit back down just as Margot and Rowan return with a tray of mini cheesecakes and a selection of toppings to garnish them with. Alex seems fine, joking and moaning over the delicious dessert, but Grant is noticeably quiet, even for him. I exchange a glance with Maddy and nod toward Grant, but she gives a slight shake of her head.

She leans over and whispers. “That’s his brooding face. Give him some time to think through whatever is bothering him.”

Since she’s known him far longer than I have, I will defer to her wisdom for now. But it’s really hard knowing that something is bothering him and not being able to help.

Once everyone has had their fill, Maddy and I help Margot clear the table and clean up inside. Somewhere in the back and forth, I lose track of Grant. Did he leave?

I’m not sure, but I do know that the early flight and all of this ‘peopling’ is catching up to me and I’m ready to chill by myself for a few minutes. I thank Margot for the meal and excuse myself to go take a shower and read for a bit.

Half an hour later the shower—which was every bit as luxurious as I thought it would be—has left me feeling clean and refreshed, but also wide awake. I sit cross-legged on the bed and try to start my new book, but I’m still preoccupied with thoughts of Grant. What did Alex say to him?

I’ve only managed to get five pages into the first chapter when I hear footsteps in the hallway, followed by the sound of Grant’s door opening and shutting softly. I chew my bottom lip, trying to decide if I should go check on him or not. Finally, I decide on a text.
